Limiting alcohol will not stop booze crime: AHA

Limiting the sale of strong alcohol drinks on Australia Day will not reduce binge-drinking, an Australian Hotels Association spokesman said.

Police Chief Inspector Guy Haberley sent an email asking Newcastle bottle shops and pubs to refuse to sell drinks with more than 4% alcohol before 2pm.

He made the suggestion after a jump in binge-drinking, anti-social behaviour and alcohol violence on the public holiday.

AHA's Rolly de With said preventing locals from buying wine or full-strength beer will not stop binge-drinking.

"I think most people will plan ahead... buy grog the day before," he said.

Mr de With said the suggestion is not fair on law-abiding residents.

He said that hotels have to comply with laws, including the responsible service of alcohol.
