Alcohol limits won't help

ACTING Queensland Premier Paul Lucas doesn’t believe limiting alcohol sales on Australia Day will reduce alcohol fuelled violence and antisocial behaviour and neither does Gympie’s Liquor Accord Chair Lesley Mitchell.

Ms Mitchell said limiting alcohol sales on Australia Day would only affect venues as people planning on staying home could stock up on alcohol the day before.

“A lot of venues spend a lot of money on entertainment, they won’t get the support,” she said.

“I really think once again they’re looking for a quick fix,” she said.

It’s the culture that needs to change, she said, rather than the alcohol sales.

“That’s not addressing the problem of people drinking excessively.”

Ms Mitchell said venues needed to stop serving intoxicated people.

Luckily, there are never any problems in Gympie, she said.

“The police have done a good job, there’s been no (alcohol related) problems in Gympie of late.”

New South Wales Police Chief Inspector Guy Haberley started the debate when he emailed bottle shops and pubs in his state asking for them to refuse the sale of alcoholic drinks with an alcohol content of more than four per cent before 2pm on Australia Day.

Queensland police have not said they agree with limiting alcohol sales, but said extra measures were needed to curb alcohol related violence.

Mr Lucas said he was happy to look into limiting sales but didn’t think there was a problem with behaviour on Australia Day in Queensland.

“People can have (alcohol) the day before at home. I’m not really sure that’s the solution to it,” he said.
